Andrew's Story

Andrew’s Story: A Journey Spanning Decades
Andrew’s journey with mental and physical health has spanned many years, marked by resilience, recovery, and a long-standing partnership with Response.
Life Before Response
After completing an apprenticeship in engineering between 1974 and 1978, Andrew began a career in aviation, joining CSE Aviation in Kidlington (which would later become Oxford Aviation Academy). There, he was part of a training programme for RAF recruits. Over the following years, Andrew took on a variety of roles, including a position in military intelligence with MI6.
Facing Complex Health Challenges
In early adulthood, Andrew began experiencing episodes of paralysis alongside symptoms of schizophrenia. These challenges led to long-term medical support, including medication to help manage the side effects of his condition. He became a patient at Warneford Hospital in Headington in 1982 after suffering from brain paralysis, which had affected his oxygen levels prior to starting treatment.
Finding Support with Response
During the 1990s, Andrew spent time at a care home in Charlbury, near Chipping Norton. Then, in 1997, he began what would become a significant and lasting chapter of his journey, his time with us here at Response.
Building Strength Through Support
Over the past few decades, Andrew has made noticeable improvements in both his physical and mental wellbeing. With the support of Response, he has grown stronger, fitter, and more self-aware. Reflecting on his journey, Andrew recognises the changes in his mental health and the important role that Response has played in supporting him along the way.
Looking Ahead with Hope
While he acknowledges that the goal for everyone is to move on and live independently, Andrew shares that he still values the support and structure that Response provides. “I know my goal is to live on my own one day,” he says, “but for now, I’d like to stay with Response.”
Andrew’s story is one of persistence, healing, and hope for the future.
