At Response, we empower people to build new skills, grow in confidence, and have a real say in shaping the services that support them. Through various opportunities, individuals can become Experts by Experience (EbEs), using their lived experience to influence decisions and drive meaningful change within Response.

EbEs can be involved in interview panels, the Advisory Board and focus groups, based on their interests. Families, Friends & Carers are also encouraged to participate in the Carers Group, providing an opportunity to share their views and experiences and help shape the support we provide.

Experts by Experience

At Response, we empower people to build new skills, grow in confidence, and have a real say in shaping the services that support them. Through various opportunities, individuals can become Experts by Experience (EbEs), using their lived experience to influence decisions and drive meaningful change within Response.

EbEs can be involved in interview panels, the Advisory Board and focus groups, based on their interests. Families, Friends & Carers are also encouraged to participate in the Carers Group, providing an opportunity to share their views and experiences and help shape the support we provide.

Chris Brown, Lived Experience and Involvement Coordinator at Response addresses a large group of seated attendees in a bright conference room, with a presentation screen visible in the background.

Involvement opportunities at Response

EbEs play a key role in interview panels, influencing the recruitment process from start to finish.

They contribute to shaping interview questions, bring their own perspectives when exploring candidates’ responses, ask follow-up questions where appropriate, and have a voice in the final decision-making process.

This ensures that lived experience is meaningfully represented in recruitment and helps identify candidates with the right qualities to support the people who use our services.

The Response Advisory Board is a space, where meaningful changes are co-produced with people with lived experience in mental health services, ensuring that trauma-informed and person-centred practice is embedded in the future of Response.”

The Board supports our Executive team by sharing lived experience insights and strengthening understanding of mental health challenges.

It also strengthens members’ confidence and supports the development of practical skills, such as effective communication, contributing to meetings and reviewing organisational policies, that are applicable in future employment and other professional settings.’

Membership is open to anyone who is currently using, or has previously used, Response’s services or other mental health services.

Focus groups, both within Response and externally with the Oxfordshire Mental Health Partnership, offer a platform for people to share their thoughts, experiences, and ideas.

These groups help us shape services that truly meet the needs of those who use them, making sure every voice is valued and heard.

Carers’ insights play a vital role in shaping responsive, person-centred care that reflects the needs and experiences of the people we support.

The Carers Support Group offers a safe, welcoming, and inclusive forum for the Families, Friends and Carers of the people we support to connect, share experiences, and contribute valuable perspectives. The group also provides opportunities to learn about local services, resources, and support networks, enabling participants to make informed decisions and navigate available services more effectively.

The group meets monthly (every second Friday of each month at Grove House), providing a regular opportunity for engagement, information sharing, and mutual support.

If you woud like to get involved with the Carers Support Group, please use this link and we will contact you.

Every engagement and co-production opportunity at Response is designed to give people the chance to engage at a level that is aligned with their interests.

Involvement is entirely optional, but for those who choose to take part, their contributions help shape a more inclusive, responsive and supportive organisation.

What is it like to be an Expert by Experience?

Being an Expert by Experience is a great way to build confidence. Being on the interview panel has been great to get insight into how things are done. It was very rewarding to see my experience being acknowledged when hiring new staff.

Steve - Interview Panellist

I joined the Advisory Board because I wanted to make sure people with lived experience have a real say in shaping services. Being involved has made me feel like I'm stepping into something meaningful, like my voice actually counts. It's been early days, but there's a sense of possibility, and I want to help build something that lasts. This matters to me because, for too long, people like me have been on the receiving end of decisions. Now I want to help change the way things are done.
