From panic, to possibility
At 25, David had already been through more than most. A care leaver navigating adulthood without a safety net, he had tried mental health support before, but it had never quite fitted.
By the time David self-referred to Response’s Mental Wealth Academy service, anxiety and panic attacks had become a daily reality. On some days, they made it impossible to leave the house. He had become isolated from friends, cut off from ordinary life, and was carrying thoughts of self-harm that he had never fully been able to share in a space that felt safe enough.
David told us this felt like his last chance.
The Support
From the start, Response’s approach was shaped entirely around David. His MWA worker recognised that trust had to be earned, not assumed. David had told his story to professionals before and felt unheard; this time would be different.
Sessions were kept flexible and responsive. Some weeks, David needed space to offload, a room where he could speak freely without judgement. Other weeks, the focus shifted to practical therapeutic tools and resources he could take away and use in his own time. By putting David in the driving seat, his confidence grew. He arrived at sessions knowing he would be heard, and left with something genuinely useful.
The Outcome
The transformation in David’s life has been profound. The panic attacks that once came daily without warning, leaving him housebound, are gone. He has not only left his home with confidence, but ventured beyond his town entirely, something that would have felt unthinkable when he first came to us.
David now holds two part-time jobs. He is building the life he once feared was out of reach.
